Syracuse, Sicily

This scenic gem is a small island, joined to Sicily by 2 bridges which link it to the more modern city of Siracusa, in the South Eastern region of Sicily. It contains a delightful mix of old world charm, modern day finesse with a bit of mythology thrown in for good measure. Only an hour away from Catania and its international airport.

Yesterday

Once the second largest Greek city to Athens, which it beat in 500BC; which resulted in the fall of the Greek empire. Also a key city to the Byzantine Empire. It was levelled to the ground in the 1963 earthquake, and was rebuilt with the Baroque style of the time. As you walk around you can truly picture how it was in the past.

One of the great things to see is the famous ancient greek theatre where they still hold plays during the summer months.

Today

It retains its old world charm but with modern amenities. The markets, shops, piazza's, malls and shoreline make it a lively place. Only 5 minutes to the modern Syracuse and nearby beautiful southern Mediterranean beaches. Some parts of Ortigia are still under restoration, which only adds to its charm and character.

Unesco

Ortigia was listed in 2005 as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The motive for its listing is due to its amazing architecture, history and rich culture.
